My cat is having constipation problems. I think he has anemia, but in addition to thyroid problems. He does #1 ok but #2 is not happening now for about 2-3 days. I have kept him hydrated--have given him enough water and he is passing it ok, although the Vet has told me that his kidneys are far from being 199%. Pewter is 17.5 years old. I have given him a bit of pumpkin yesterday about 1.5 teaspoons in total and then again .5 teaspon today; both times mixed in his food, which he has been eating in small amounts a few times during the day. Is there hope for us? I have even taken him out a few times to keep him stimulated but nothing is happening. How long after you give him pumpkin--I cooked the puree myself, it's pumpkin and water! It's pure, not canned. Should I try pumpkin filling? Some people have had good result with it as well as sweet potato. Whiuch one is more likely to do the job?

Two initial thoughts:

1) With a marked decrease in food-intake, there's going to be less waste produced. Two or three days isn't life-threatening for a cat but it may be uncomfortable. It depends on whether the cat is truly constipated or just hasn't produced enough in two of three days to have to go.

2) Given your cat's advanced age and other health issues, you really should call your vet for at least advice over the phone. Natural food remedies don't always work with chronic constipation and the cat may need a gentle laxative like Lactulose to be prescribed by the vet.

Seventeen and a half years old? How lucky you are.

Switch to an all natural grain free canned... dry isn't what you want/need. If possible I would wean him onto a canned diet such as

Instincts

Wellness core.

Ziwi peak

Innova EVO

Natures logic.

Your cat is old... but not OLD cats can live over 30 sometimes.

Research the truth about dry feeding online... I think it may have caused the problems you are currently dealing with.

Thanks to all who replied to my posting "cat constipation." Unfortunately we had to put our Pewter to sleep on Nov. 16 after his back paws had given up and he couldn't even get to his litter box to do #1. it was very sad. But given our many years together, we've decided to embrace the great memories and be positive in recovering from his loss. He will be in our hearts forever. He was such a lovable guy. Thanks again.
