I have two cats and two litter boxes, and I clean the clumping litter twice daily. It works out pretty well, although there is an occasional "accident" (they are both 14 years old, so I cut them some slack!).

Yes, by all means, spay/neuter them all. Not only will they not spray, they will be more laid back.

He has five cats after I gave away my cat because one of the neighbors jumped onto me about him getting out of my apt..) ALso two dogs...they do inappropriate elimination too....or one of them does LOL) Wondering why do cats do things like this? I know for a fact that SO's four cats are NOT neutered and the one I gave him is neutered and declawed (and of course doesn't act like this ) Just wondering what cat experts out there could tell me that I don't know....Oh and BTW one of the cats sprays, too...SO calls the cat who defecates inappropriately, leaving "a brown mountain majesty LOL..." gross, I know, cat feces really stinks.....
Were the litter boxes clean? I have one cat and two boxes of which he mostly uses one and it gets cleaned twice a day. The only feces I find on the floor are ones that stick to his fur. Your cat was probably using the floor as a sign to let you know his litter was not clean enough. If I had five cats I'd have at least 3 boxes and clean them 3 times a day, Cats can develop long term chronic and degenerativ e medical problems if they don't have a CLEAN place to relieve themselves.

Secondly my cat's feces don't smell at all and that is becuase he gets clean healthful home prepared food as per this website. www.felinefuture.com. If you'd like to get rid of "litter box" or "cat smells" the way to do it is to URGRADE their diet. It might cost more but you'll save in the long run with next to zero vet bills--and your house will smjell a lot nicer; cleaning the litter will be a lot more pleasant and your cats will be healthier and happier.

I would be shocked if the random pooping was the only problem in that scenario.
Nearly double the cats here. I guess my house would shock you. Not only no random pooping or peeing, but no other significant problems either. Once in awhile there's a mean tap on the head from one to another, I guess. 4 of them are curled up on a pile on the sofa right now together though.

Always neuter (and marking is not even the most important reason WHY you should do this). No declawing. Litterboxes strategically placed so that no cats can boss other cats about their use. Good cleaning, but not with stinky chemicals that might have set that one off to "fix" the freshly mopped floor. Check medical problems - constipation, diarrhea can cause this.

Some cats have substrate preferences that you have to work around. In other words, attracted to soft piles of clothes (don't leave them on the floor) or porcelin surfaces like bathtubs (wouldn't bother me much, but if it did and I had one like that, I'd put a litterbox in the tub or very close, and very little litter so that the surface was as close to a smooth bathtub floor as possible.)
