I recently purchased the Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals. They had a chapter on Cats that I found interesting as a cat lover. According to the chapter cats were domesticated from wildcats 4,000 to 7,000 years ago. But didn't the NYTimes have an article documenting evidence of domestication in the Near east as far back as 8,000 to 10,000 years ago? When and where did cats first become domesticated? I have see conflicting information on this regard before. What is the generally accepted theory.
Secondly, I understand that there are the Eurasian Wildcats and African Wildcats...same species as domesticated cats, they just live in the wild. According to the Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals, the Roman brought African wildcats to Europe and they bred with European wildcats. So does that mean that domesticated cats around the world are the decendants of European and African wildcats? The book also claimed that it was the importation of these African cats (that I am assuming where already domesticated) that began to have Europeans keep cats as pets. Is this the accepted theory? Did Europeans only keep domesticated cats as pets beginning in the Roman Era? When did other cultures begin keeping domesticated cats as pets?
When did other cultures begin keeping domesticated cats as pets?
My feline history time-line is a bit fuzzy, but the ancient Egyptians certainly had domesticated cats about. They were worshiped as gods. Cats have never forgotten that either.

Furthermore, cats will never let humans forget it.
few people realise that cats are the least domesticated of animals... the ideal diet of most cats ( FIV+ out and feline luek +out) hasn't changed sense those early days- rodents and birds... hense we see a flood of overweight, sick cats. 80% of cats have dental disease in some degree by the time they are 3 years old! That would be like 80% of all humans have dental disease by the time they are 30!
You cannot even live in a house comfortably with intact cats. That alone should tell you how wild they are still at heart.
back when the ape lady lived people WERE animals, and lived a life of fear, terror, wild sexuality and utter freedom.
The conspect of domestication/order hadn't even begun... let alone animal keeping.
