Aren't these just inbred cats w/ genetic defects? I knew an old farmer who had a bunch, the mother & siblings, etc. interbred w/ each other, & most had extra toes, funky looking eyes, ears, most were really crazy & wild, couldn't be tamed, etc. I was just wondering as I saw some for sale in the KC Star today.

No! They're special, and lovely, and very treasured!

Not my mutant-lil' moo!

Gotta love the toes!

It is technically a genetic deviation, but not necessarily a defect. I wouldn't necessarily call it a product of inbreeding either.

A human example would be that some people's earlobes are attached, others are not. Some people can roll there toungues, others can't. It all depends what genes the parents carry.

The fact that this person appears to be breeding kittens is a whole different issue. I am wholeheartedly against un-licensed breeders.

It is genetic, but not from in-breeding.

Yep, it's a breed really. Hemingway was given one ages ago by a Captain when he built his home in Key West. They were said to bring good luck to sailors. Descendents of that cat still live at his home which is now a museum. Very cool place to visit!

This site has info on them and pictures of Hemingway's descendent cats. I've heard many people call this breed of cat the Hemingway cat as a matter of fact.

Cats of any breed can be polydactyls. The existance of extra toes does not change their breed. Since the Hemingway population was not discouraged from breeding, they have a lot of multi-toed cats.

If you have a bunch of people with freckles have children and their children only mate with other freckled children - it does not create a new breed of freckled people. Similarly, polydactyl is not a recognized breed.

basically its a defect in the number of toes one has, humans can rarely have it to a lesser degree.

I have always heard them called Hemingway cats too. I have one and she is the best cat EVER. She is a muted long hair tabby with green eyes. We got her from a shelter where she chose us by meowing loudly when we walked awau

Pierre was 6/5. He used every one of those extra claws for combat.

Best mutant-paw shot so far of lil' moo.
I call her pancake-feet sometimes. Endearingly.
