I think she was big but within the R&B world. All soul/funk people know about Teena. Maybe she wasn't too interested in trying too hard to cross over beyond that.

She had to leave Motown for contract reasons. In fact she sued Motown and got a new law passed with her name on it. It's called the Brockert Initiative.

Yep I know but I think when she went to Epic they didn't know how to properly promote her and her music, which resulted in her losing a large chunk of her audience.
