For me, the most respected celebrities are the ones that shut up and stay out of the limelight except as their profession dictates, and/or do good deeds because it's the right thing to do rather than because it's the fashionable thing to do.

Yes, Toby Keith is also a very patriotic artist who shows his support for the troops. He has visited the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan more than many presidential hopefuls. Barrack HUSSEIN Osama (I mean Obama) hasn't even gone once!

For sports, I really respect LeBron James and Shaq as role models for youths. I know how many kids Shaq has, but he's so good with kids, he's nice and widely respected by everyone. LeBron is the least selfish basketball superstar I've ever seen, and also, seems to be an engaging personality

I really like Mandy Moore. She seems to stay out of the craziness of the other people in her age range! She is an all-american kinda woman.

Ellen DeGeneres, because she is a successful lesbian actress/comedian. That's REALLY tough to do, and apparently she's a genuinely lovely person to boot.

Jodie Foster, because she's just an actress...not a celebrity. She doesn't play those stupid games and keeps her kids well out of the limelight. You'll never see her flashing her frilly bits for the pap. She's a classy broad.

Amen. Couldn't have said it better myself. Alot of these "good deeds" really are investments in the star's future, more than anything else. Do good and more people figure to buy your albums, go to your movie, etc... .Its what you do when no one is watching that best judges one's character.

Someone mentioned Denzel Washington. There was an article a few months ago about him visiting an army base and seeing housing for families visiting disabled soldiers. He asked how much it cost to build such a house then wrote a check and told them to build another one. What a class guy.
A friend of mine owns a tavern in Pennsylvania where they filmed "Silence of the Lambs". Jodie Foster came in for lunch a couple of times and he said she was truly a classy gal and was just one of the guys.
Peyton Manning does sooooo much for the kids of Indianapolis. Most of it is done under the radar. Recently they named a hospital "Peyton Manning Children's Hospital". He is the best thing that ever happened to Indianapolis.

Bono, I am a huge fan of his campaigning in Africa, and his music. His band isn't behind him on his whole Africa crusade, surprisingly.

I'm not a big fan of Bill and Hillary except in one respect - I think they almost set the gold standard for keeping Chelsea out of the craziness that surrounds being celebrities. She appears to be a very level-headed young woman who has quietly gone on her own way - no muss, no fuss, very few news stories about her other than achievements and accomplishments. The Clintons did something right there.
