Teri Shields, the notorious stage mom who spearheaded the career of her daughter, Brooke, died Wednesday after a long illness related to dementia, a spokesperson for Brooke Shields told the New York Times on Tuesday. She was 79.

As manager of Brooke’s career, Teri was often criticized for letting her daughter star in a number of controversial movies and campaigns, including the 1978 movie Pretty Baby, in which Brooke played a teenage prostitute.

I was always confused by this woman. Her intentions. Her scruples. Everything about her confused me.
Brooke seems fine though. Lord only knows if she's had years of therapy.

Agreed! She was the original stagemom, but Brooke somehow stayed grounded. As far as I can remember, she's never been trouble. She attained an education. Teri must have done something right.

Several years ago when Teri was diagnosed with dementia and in assisted living, an employee at the home sold info to a tabloid who in turn sent people to the home and took Teri out "for fresh air" and tried to get personal info about Brooke. Generally I am not too sympathetic to celebrities but this low blow had me so angry. What a bunch of sleeziods to take a sick woman like that. Celebrities pay a big price for all that fame.
