I've never been a huge fan of country music but there are some singers that I particularly like:

George Strait
Ray Price
Willie Nelson
George Jones
Vince Gill
Bonnie Raitt
Hank Snow

When I heard of the death of George Jones today I was saddened. His career and life certainly had its ups and downs but he managed to bounce back.

R.I.P. George Jones

I'm guessing Vince would sing this, his song, for George:

I heard about it on Twitter this afternoon and I am saddened. Anyone who knows me will tell you George Jones is in my top 5 ATF country musicians.

Some of the atrocity that passes as country music is truly sad, but not all is lost, there some hope amogst the new crops.

RIP Possum

I'm just glad here in Houston we have 97.1 which plays Legends of Country Music. George is certainly in that category. God bless ya, George.

Great list, let me add Patsy Cline and Don Williams, Reba ain't bad either.

I am surprised there hasn't been more responses on his passing. He was a true icon. Is it an age thing? I read somewhere on the internet today, where someone (I presume very young) metioed Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain was "Old School country".

Here is a tribute I wrote.

RIP George Jones, I enjoyed your talent through the years.

Two songs of his I loved were 'he stopped loving her today' and 'choices'. I'd pick he stopped if came down to it.

Since I work a normal day I obviously missed the airing of the memorial. But mother of Mary- Vince Gill and Patty Loveless tore me down. I liked that the parts I was able to see (I guess they are only up until the Grand Ole Opry has them pulled for copyright purposes) showed a true breadth of who he was instead of glossing everything over.

To me he was one of those people who represented a place in time so fully that it feels like we are losing the context as well as the singer. I doubt musice ever sees the likes of George Jones (and especially the George/Tammy pairing) ever again. People just don't have as much to gain or lose or the freedom to drift in and out of their vices anymore. I know they moved past one another in their personal lives but "He stopped loving her today' and "Til I can make it on my own' remain the ultimate statement and response songs for me.

Watching the memorials at his funeral there is a whole bunch of country singers looking much older now.
