What about Johnny Carson? Wasn't he one of the greatest?

George Carlin
Paul Mooney
Richard Prior
Louis C.K.
Patton Oswalt
Bob Newhart
Don Rickles
Rodney Dangerfield
Gilbert Gottfried (check out his Comedy Central Roast performances, he KILLS IT)
Louis Black

I think Groucho Marx and Jack Benny were two of the funniest men that ever lived, but I don't consider either one primarily a stand up comic, so I didn't include them. Bob Hope comes closer, and possibly should have been on the list. I tried to be strict about it, people who were known primarily as traditional stand-up comics, or at least produced a solid and respectable body of stand up work.

Does anyone remember Robert Schimmel? I saw him in a Rodney Dangerfield special in the late '80s, and Bill Hicks and Robert Schimmel were the funniest by far. Sadly, both are dead now. Bill Hicks died years ago of cancer, and Robert Schimmel beat cancer, only to be killed in an automobile accident.

I LOVED Chris Rock's first stand-up show many years ago, but the later ones I saw were all racist rants. I don't like it when women comedians only talk about women's issues or when black comedians only talk about black issues. I like it when they just tell funny jokes about life, which was what Chris Rock did so well in his first show, and what he does in interviews. It's also why I like Sarah Silverman so much, because she doesn't go for the easy women in the bathroom, feminine products, typical female comedian jokes.
