Absolutely, but don't forget about Tom Waits also. All 4 of these guys are totally about the work & integrity & "pop" celebrity was what they abhorred & actively avoided.

Agreed, Tom Waits absolutely belongs among the poets of rock music.

True, but Lou Reed's amazing drug intake, not to mention his years of heavy drinking, destroyed his liver.

He had a transplant the May before his death, but complications from that followed and he passed away.

Sad, but his wife Laurie Anderson reported that he did face the end bravely.
