When she was about 12, Shailene Woodley starred as a daughter of rebel parents during the Revolution in "An American Girl" movie. Her best friend was the daughter of Loyalist parents.
She then starred as a high school freshman who gets pregnant and has the child on the Family Channel show "The Secret Life of the American Teenager".
Since that show ended, she has become a major movie star. Why? Is she that talented of an actress? I wouldn't say that she is the most attractive actress. What is her appeal?
Her mother on the show, Molly Ringwald was also a major movie star as a teenager during the 80's. She was never that attractive either.
I guess looks aren't everything.

Well no, looks aren't everything, but that said, I also don't know what her appeal is. I've never been particularly impressed with her acting. It was a rather odd leap from a star of a mediocre ABC Family show to major movie star. I don't get what propelled her so quickly. It couldn't have been that show. I don't want to go so far as to suggest casting couch, but there's got to be something 'behind the scenes' that we don't see that helped her moved up.
I'm not only not impressed with her acting, but the few times I've seen her in interviews, etc., she comes across as unlikeable & very ignorant (at least to me). I don't get her appeal.
I don't get it either. I do think she's a decent enough actress but the other day we were watching the Divergent DVD, and my daughter (age 10) went on and on about how perfect her hair was and I was just... confused. My son (age 8) reacted to the line where another character told her she was beautiful by saying "she's pretty mommy" and I was like... um.. okay.
To me she just looks like a regular girl. I think kids and teens just seem to swallow the line that someone popular is "beautiful" and "special" hook, line and sinker. I suppose I did it too when I was that age.

She hasn't been in that many movies. Her breakout role would probably be The Descendants, which came out in 2011. She was nominated for a Golden Globe and won an Independent Spirit Award. I don't see why its shocking that she would continue to get roles after giving what many thought was an outstanding performance. And really, she has only been in 3 other movies. And looking on IMDB the only other movies she is currently attached to our the sequels to Divergent. Hardly what I would call a major movie star. And as far as being propelled so quickly? She's been on a popular ABC family show since 2008. There are plenty of actors who have become major movie stars in far less time.
She may be related to someone in "the biz". I am always surprised to learn that so-and-so is related to so-and-so. For example (I'm going to be dating myself as I USED to know EVERYTHING about the "stars", now I couldn't care less):
Susan Saint James, of McMillian and Wife, is the AUNT of Christa Miller, who was in the Drew Carey Show.
Nicholas Cage is the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire.
Melanie Griffith is the daughter of Hitchcock star ("The Birds) Tippi Hedren.
I know there are many more but cannot think of anymore off-hand.

Reason: Spelling error correction.
As a previous poster mentioned, the Hollywood
casting couch rules. Sexual harassment lawsuits?
Bah!!! They would never work again in Tinseltown
(Only those without real power get charged).
The casting couch has room for both male and female.
I know this because I know of a few people who were
"turned out" for small parts in movies . They just
looked at it as part of climbing the ladder to success.
