It was indeed sad news. I am re-watching the eleven seasons, and Mr. Dunsworth was great in his role.
I particularly liked when he had a personal breathalyzer so that he could keep his level of drunkenness 'stable'. If he blew into it, and the result was (say) 1.2, he would say "hooray, two drinky poos!" and hoist the bottle to his mouth, to get his level back up 1.8.
I frequent a Reddit forum for "mostly " US cops. TPB has a big following down there, that I didn't know about. The show seems to have created a large group of cops who watch it on a regular basis.
Sort of related............A Tragically Hip music video, with Gord Downie, the TP boys and Don Cherry in it. Funny as hell and dead on the money, re the life style down east, in some places.
On Trailer Park Boys, John Dunsworth (Jim Lahey) was a former cop. I forgot why he left the force but I googled it.
'James "Jim" Lahey (John Dunsworth) is the supervisor of Sunnyvale Trailer Park and the series' main antagonist. In his youth, Lahey was an idealistic police officer, but since his wrongful dismissal as a result of a prank by Julian, Ricky, and Bubbles on Halloween 1977, he degenerated into a bitter alcoholic.'
I love The Tragically Hip, and of course, mourn the late Gord Downie.
Do you remember The Kids In The Hall? Did you ever watch it? That was a favourite of mine as well.
The Tragically Hip performed the song 'Butts Wigglin' from the film 'Brain Candy' that Kids In The Hall released.

John Dunsworth was never a Police officer. What you read was a made up bit of TV show promotional fluff.
His life bio makes no mention of any connection to being a actual Police officer.
His life was built on a University degree in drama at Guelph U, and a series of unromantic jobs as a taxi driver, and a railway worker. His acting career began slowly with bit parts in Halifax theatre, and a few bits in locally produced short films. He never ventured far from his Halifax home town.

No, on the show LAHEY was a police officer. Not in real life.
