The question was whether or not it ran in the family. Hence looking toward the previous generations. I'm not familiar with the Spencers, so I stuck with the Royal Family. Using weddings as recognizable milestones ... Charles and Edward both married in their early 30's (similar to Wills and Harry). Charles had a full head of dark hair; Edward was definitely suffering significant hair loss. Andrew married a bit older with a full head of hair; Philip was mid-20's when he married, and definitely had a receding hairline, though he still had a lot of hair.
Spencer clan is rather famous for having heads of thick ginger hair while young, especially the boys/men. Then as they age things as want to do happen.
Earl Spencer actually seems to have more on top than Prince William and comparable to Prince Harry.
Diana Spencer's nephew, Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp (son of her brother Earl Spencer), seems to have faired rather well in the hair keeping lottery.
Of course being a "Greek" royal family some would assume Prince Phillip would have brought some "southern European" dark, thick hair and so forth into the gene pool. But alas the royal family of Greece is Danish and German.
It is true that, objectively speaking, Prince William is not quite as handsome without his hair. Time waits for no one, not even princes.
However, I would say that in the last few years, Prince William looks more comfortable being in public. He has an ease about him that was lacking before. William has spoken about how, initially, fatherhood was difficult for him. My guess is, he has had to deal with issues relating to his childhood and his parents. Perhaps he received professional help, like Harry did, and/or perhaps Catherine and her family have helped him.
In any case, he does seem more comfortable in his own skin.
