I knew this was coming because of Stan's advanced age, but I was still shocked when my son phoned to tell me last night.
I grew up on Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, and all those other guys working at Marvel comics in the early 60s.
I wrote Stan a letter over 50 years ago, after Steve Ditko left Marvel. I was just a kid upset at Steve not drawing Spiderman anymore. I didn't know the circumstances, and wanted him to come back.
Stan wrote me a wonderful letter on notepaper surrounded on the edges by Marvel characters. He took the time to do this, for a kid all the way in England.
I was so glad he lived long enough, to see the characters he dreamed up in his head, make it to the big screen. His imagination, dreaming up those stories, for all the Marvel superheroes, enabled kids like me at the time, to lose ourselves in those comics. RIP Stan Lee, you were great.

Sad news. RIP.
In humanizing his heroes, giving them character flaws and insecurities that belied their supernatural strengths, Mr. Lee tried “to make them real flesh-and-blood characters with personality.
Under Mr. Lee, Marvel transformed the comic book world by imbuing its characters with the self-doubts and neuroses of average people, as well an awareness of trends and social causes and, often, a sense of humor.
Mr. Lee’s unwavering energy suggested that he possessed superpowers himself. He will be missed.
