Hard to believe she was 75; she will always be remembered as the 20-30something Laverne.
I do remember her in a small role in an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She played a single gal being interviewed in a (gasp) singles bar by MTM for a story on the swinging singles dating scene of early 1970s.
Exactly and her former husband, Rob Reiner has said that "I could win the Nobel Prize and they'd write 'Meathead wins the Nobel Prize'."
I think of Rob Reiner more for his career as a director, maybe because I was more familiar with his films than his role as Meathead.
Penny Marshall being forever associated with the character of Laverne...it could be worse. Like, being forever associated with the character Squiggy. Poor David Lander/Squiggy. He’s probably a highly gifted, multi-faceted, Shakespearean-trained actor, too.
I saw a couple of ABC’s early 1970s “Movies of the Week” on YouTube where Penny appeared in small roles - “The Feminist and the Fuzz” and “The Crooked Hearts”.
More persons know or knew of late Vivian Leigh as "Scarlett O'Hara", but never the less her obituaries listed the deceased's legal name.
One thread already was started, and subsequently moved regarding the death of "Penny Marshall". This likely was due to someone not seeing and or whatever a thread about "Laverne" being dead.
In any event like many other actors Ms. Marshall did far more than "Laverne & Shirley", especially behind the camera.
Laverne and Shirley ran from late 1970's to early 1980's; several generations have been born since who likely don't know the show but might be more familiar with some of Ms. Marshall's later accomplishments.
Personally think the film "Awakenings" was one of her best efforts. Also while she didn't star in the film, many *do* know the movie "Big".
It is like saying Ron Howard is only known as "Richie Cunningham" or worse "Opie".
We're not writing obituaries here.
The other thread was created in the wrong forum.. Hence the reason it was moved. It happens all the time here where someone creates a thread in the TV forum about a TV actor passing, when it should go in the celebrities forum. They wind up getting merged. The name on the thread is pretty irrelevant when it's not being created in the right place.
And, most people.. It would be questionable where to create something. It's certainly valid for a post about Penny Marshall's death to be in either TV or Celebrities. Mods have pretty much decided that Celebrities is where these things should go.. Some people have caught on to that and post them here.. Others, some in the rush to be first, post it in the TV forum. Mods wind up combining them and tossing them in here.
