I was barely a teenager when The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was on CBS so many of the jokes went over my head but I could tell this was a different type of show. I really watched it for the musical guests: The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Steppenwolf, Peter Paul & Mary, Glen Campbell—many others.
I didn’t realize all the talent behind the scenes that later became famous:Rob Reiner, Steve Martin, Mason Williams, Bob Einstein. It was a groundbreaking show.
RIP Tommy. Say it one last time to Dick: “Mommy always loved you best!”
Tommy was one of the coolest rebel crap disrupters known to man.
The way he pointed out how messed up things were while dodging the censorship imposed on him was a work of art.
RIP Yo Yo Man.
I am pleased that Tom Smothers' death is getting plenty of play on the news. He was truly an outstanding comedian (he wrote virtually all of their material), and extremely intelligent. I did love the Smother Brother's TV show back in the day.
I still have their records. I liked one exchange, where Tommy is telling the audience about his brother's wedding:
Tom: "So, after the wedding we headed over to the hotel to watch the conception"
Dick: "Not conception, Tommy, Reception. You went to the hotel for the reception".
Tom: (after appropriate pause): "I think we went to the wrong room".
They also exposed people to a lot of traditional folk songs.
Well. He had a good run although sad to hear this news.
I was a fan of Tommy and Dick Smothers. I watched their show regularly and got to see them twice in Tahoe. You think their TV show was funny, you should have seen them live. Too bad CBS didn't have the backbone to keep them on the air but succumbed to pressure to cancel them. "Too controversial," they said. Compared to what we see today, these guys were mild. A great comedy duo that brought this fan a lot of laughs. RIP, sir.

He and Dick beat CBS in court and topped that off by winning the Emmy for the season when they were thrown off the air.
I met them and got their autograph 30 years ago this year. I was a high school senior.
That is such sad news. The Smothers Brothers were so talented and gave me so much joy.
