I agree only in that one would assume perhaps there had been an accident that caused bleeding if they saw a red stain on a floor or carpet through a window of someone they knew. I'm sure he really felt guilty after the truth came out the next day.

Maybe he knew that her parents drank red wine on occasion and honestly thought that it really was red wine. I certainly wouldn't have investigated further under those circumstances.
Edit: She was 22, maybe she drank red wine on occasion.
