The last time I remember crying when a celebrity died was a few years back when John Ritter passed away. His death was just so sudden and completely unexpected. He was always one of my favorite actors and seemed like such a nice man.
Aaliyah was a huge star to me. I remember the day I first saw her first video Back & Forth ( I was 15) and began following her career on that day. I had every album and was in awe of all her videos. I thought she was beautiful and I really admired her. I think I was also only 2 years older, so I felt like she was a friend.
She is close in age to me also. I saw her once when she visited the Macy's department store in NYC. She was gracious to hang around and greet people like myself who were not allowed to get her autograph, (The security guard cut the line off about 3 people in front of me- I wanted to leave but I decided to stick around to get a closer look at her) she was very sweet and kind. I have many of her songs on all my mp3 players.

I saw her in Times Square when they were promoting Romeo Must Die. I still have most of her songs too, At Your Best is my bf's ring tone. She had an awesome voice and I would have loved to see where she was going to take her acting. I thought it was admirable that her acting roles didn't involve singing (Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce)
She did part of her "Rock the Boat" video at my undergrad alma mater. It threw me b/c they were talking about a plane crash in the Bahamas at the time on the local news (I lived in Miami at the time) and I heard it but didn't hear it....then they said it was Aaliyah....my heart hurt for her, especially after hearing how they overloaded the plane. She seemed to be such a NICE person...not one celebrity had a negative thing to say about her.
I was 13 the year We Are The World was released. I remember what Michael was like before the plastic surgeries and media hoopla. I count myself among those who are fans for life.
River Phoenix, Kurt Cobain, Jade Goody... just off-hand.
When I was younger, I cried for them personally; River Phoenix was my peer. He was approximately my age. I had watched him in movies since early childhood. It felt like a friend had died.
Now, when celebs die, my sadness is mainly for their moms.
I'm overly empathetic.
It makes me think of how I'd feel if that happened to my kid.
