Really, I always thought Denzel had a pretty wide variety Maybe it's because I just like him. I do know that Training Day was pretty out of his comfort zone though (or at least my comfort zone for watching him. I prefer him to play the good guy that everybody loves and loves to look at)
Theres no doubt about one thing with Denzel Washington,
If you just listened to the soundtrack it would almost be impossible to
distinguish one movie from another. He brings the "exact" character in
"voice delivery" to "every single movie" Even the manerisms and body language are identical in every single movie. But he's easy goin and super relaxed , so its easy to watch
Someone mentioned Jack Black...I concur. I've just about had it w/his stupid "I'm a silly doof" act in all movies. I thought maybe he would've been different in "The Holiday" but no, he still had his "look at me!" moments. Ugh.
I think Pacino had a lot of diversity in his career and did a lot well
I also think at one point he got lazy and started to just play Al Pacino
He did well in all sorts of roles as a young actor - including the gay bank robber, a heroin addict, an introspective midwestern sailor, etc
In that time frame he also played cops & gangsters - but not any more than the other roles. They are just the movies that stick out.
I think it started with Glengarry Glen Ross and Scent of a Woman - he seemed to fall into a style which he then just honed and repeated regardless of roles
He also fell into a trap of this same style of character - regardless if it was a cop, a hustler, etc - kind of an "i'm all pacino baby - oooh ha!"
