He is a pioneer in the development of the solid-body electric guitar (the Gibson Les Paul, which he helped design, is one of the most famous and enduring models), multitrack recording, and various reverb and echo effects.
Trivia for you - he attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY before he changed his name. My first husband's aunt dated him a couple of times.
He is alive, he is 91, and by the way I have a "Dead Book" of famous dead people. I started it May 1998. My friends started calling it the Dead Book. Kind of weird, but fun
