Well, I came across this today, and it appears to be working. Does require that you have an older pre iOS 4 backup if you want to preserve all your settings - if you have an external hard drive and Time Machine set up, you will have the backup.

99% certain, but unfortunately 100% wrong.... there is no way of resetting so that you revert to a previous update, so unfortunately you're stuck with an almost useless 3g iphone until such time as apple decide to release a 3g specific software upgrade which is less processor intensive.. the 3g phones are just too slow to handle the new software! (I'm in the same boat myself, before 'updating' my software my phone was working fine, now it's hopeless- thanks apple :-)

Apple is about to release iOS 4.1. The main reason is to address the iPhone 3G issues. Should be out soon.
