try wetting your finger with a little saliva and roll the ball around quite a bit. The saliva (I know it sounds kind of gross) will clean the ball and any soil or other elements that are interfering with your track ball use. I had this problem awhile back and using the method described above, it was working like new in no time.
i carry alcohol cleaning wipes for my trackball; whenever i took it in to verizon, that's what they used to get it going again.
it will eventually stop working though; when it gets stuck near the end of your warranty, call your provider and they should send you a new handset. i just got another 9630 two weeks ago. i think they've completely phased out trackballs on the new devices.
A little bit of rubbing alcohol is actually the procedure used by the technicians. If that doesn't work they remove them and clear out the sand and other particles. DO NOT use saliva or water. Rubbing alcohol almost dries instantly and will not affect interior components, water and spit will !!!

They have almost entirely switched to trackpads now. I personally preferred the track ball.

that's what I used also. Turn the handset off, open up one of those wipes, and go to town cleaning it....up/down...left/right..etc. Cleans the exterior well also.
For bad ones I would remove the trackball and soak it in CLEAR rubbing alchohol...91% works best. 30 minutes to an hour soak should do it. Not hard to do at all.
Replacements can be found on Amazon for about 3 bucks each.
