My biggest concern is having my idea stolen before I can get it launched. My second concern is the cost of development. Are there reputable companies that I can work with who will, understandably, take a cut of any profits, but who will help me in getting this thing up and running?

Find a LOCAL developer. Have them sign a NDA (non-disclosure agreement). Talk to them about your idea and find out IF they can do it, and if so, what they'll charge. Make sure you're clear that YOU will own the code, not them. Then find another developer and repeat. Talk to several, then go with the one you feel is best.

A good place to find cheap but decent developers is your local college or technical school. Students work cheap and often produce pretty good work.

If it's for the iPhone, you can download the app developer kit from their website.
