Thank you. With AT&T's plan, a new iPhone will cost $199 (I think). With Verizon's New Every Two program, that cost would be much lower.

AT&T: Promotional pricing after 2 years
T-Mobile: Promotional pricing after 2 years
Sprint: Promototional pricing after 1 year if plan above $69.99 or 2 years if less than $69.99
Old Verizon: Promotional pricing after 2 years or less AND additional $50 to $100 discount after 2 years
New Verizon: Promotional pricing after 2 years
Its just the normal cycle of things. Those of us who've had cells for nearly 30 years consider today's pricing a bargain. And thus we choose our carriers by quality of the phone connection and not the phone selection they have. And back way when I probably changed phones about every three years.

V is probably dropping the extra discount because the under 20-something buying habits are not related to service, but who has the current best phone out. There are numreous people who never even finish the first year with the same phone. Sooner or later we are going to go back to day one and have no promotional pricing (it'll be nice to have all the accessories included with the phone again).

I am hoping to go to a model where the software is not linked to the hardware and the hardware is not linked to the provider. Just like computers have been forever now.

One day maybe we will be able to buy a phone and connect it to whatever service want legally. But currently phones need to be cracked to do so.

As to the computer statement. Sorry its incorrect. Apple currently uses Intel, but for most of its life it used Motorola RISC based hardware and the software ran much betterr on it. But Intel is cheaper so.....

Nah, I'm right. You singled out a short time period of Apple that ran AIM RISC CPUs (PowerPC) that typically came with MacOS, but was perfectly capable of running ported versions of linux, and Apple's own UNIX port.

I never even mentioned Apple. I made a general statement about computers in general. No one mandated your hardware and software choices like cell service providers do today.

How is it false? You could run MSDOS or PCDOS by choice. You weren't stuck to one or the other. And you're only referencing recent computing.... "forever" implies a much larger margin of time.

This is the wrong thread for this. But if you want to open a new thread we can discuss JCL, MVS, PDP, IBM360 etc......

Nah, no need for new thread. You bring up good examples of systems in which customers had control over what they do with the hardware they purchase (or in many cases, leased).

Many times, with smart phones, even in 2-3 years, the current phones will be very capable, as long as they receive software updates. The Droid Incredible, and EVO 4G are very powerful phones... but will they get Android updates beyong 2.3? Who knows. But if the users could just go to a store, buy the update, and install it themselves.... maybe they wouldn't need to upgrade phones as often.

Also, if they could just take their phone to another provider, they might not upgrade phones as often.

People upgrade phones left and right because they have no other options to improve their experience. This is also the reason why we care so much about upgrade discounts and policies, because we feel that we're tied into these constant upgrades.

that isn't the way our market works, though. We all know how it happens. I am sure Apple knows a lot of things that they could add to their next generation phone, but will only apply a few changes and save others for the next upgrades. "Give them just enough to upgrade, but not enough to keep it for too long."
