Totally saw this coming. Though to be fair, this is a huge improvement. AT&T has been throttling 100% of its users for years now due to network congestion.

still makes no sense! Anyone on tiered data can use as much data as they want at full speed( just charged per GB), where as users on the "unlimited plan" will get throttled.To me this just sounds like a ploy to rake in the cash.
"Starting October 1, smartphone customers with unlimited data plans may experience reduced speeds once their usage in a billing cycle reaches the level that puts them among the top 5 percent of heaviest data users. These customers can still use unlimited data and their speeds will be restored with the start of the next billing cycle. Before you are affected, we will provide multiple notices, including a grace period."
"AT&T described the affected users as "a very small minority of smartphone customers" who use 12 times as much data as the average smartphone customer. But the company did not specify how much data that is."
I don't have to worry, I know I'm not top 5%. In fact, I'm in favor of this, cause I know it'll help me out with better bandwidth.

That's exactly what it is.
The carriers are experiencing unprecedented demand for wireless data. With sky-high demand and little competition, the price will skyrocket. The monthly rate won't necessarily keep climbing, but what you get for that rate will continue to shrink.
This trend will continue until consumers stop using wireless data.
This is disappointing, but I guess I'd rather have slow unlimited data than faster capped data. My biggest concern is will I be able to keep my unlimited plan when I get a new phone and contract, since my current contract is done and I'm grandfathered in.

As long as you make no changes to your contract when you renew, you will be grandfathered in, ad infinitum.
