I know they aren't released yet with no confirmed date, but I've never been in a position to get one upon release.

I'm beyond my initial 2 year contract with AT&T so I can get a new phone at a discount whenever I want.

What's the best way to go about getting an iPhone 5 on it's release? Is the only way to wait in line outside of the apple store overnight? Can you pre-order them?

AT&T's network sucks here in Chicago, should I switch to Verizon?

You can pretty much walk to any Verizon or AT&T store and purchase one on launch day.

In a big city like Chicago?? You don't think it'll sell out fast?

It might, but they usually allocate a number per store based on anticipated sales. Now that the iPhone is available on multiple carriers, it's less likely that stores will sell out as quickly as they did.

Plus, you can always contact customer support on launch day.

Stand outside of an apple store or ATT and wait for hours, or try preordering one on amazon.

here's what you can expect:

I have a feeling the iPhone 5 will not be hard to find in stock.

Agreed. The days of any phone selling out on day1 are over.
Personally I would simply pre-order from the carrier.

You can pre-order them on the website when it gets near the release to avoid even having to deal with the store. I prefer unboxing a new phone myself.

Personally I hate AT&T and would go Sprint or even Verizon well before dealing with those guys.

Things I'd rather do than use AT&T again:

... punch myself repeatedly in the face with a jackhammer
... eat a truckload of spoiled lemons dusted with alum
... listen to a monkey shriek out the unabridged works of Shakespeare
... punch myself repeatedly in the face with said monkey
... eat the unabridged works of Shakespeare

But that's another story.

Trust me on this one, order it online the minute after open up pre-orders on the Apple website. That's what I did last year and I got the iPhone 4 delivered to my house a day before it was available in stores.

You DO NOT need to stand in line at a store to get one and I can think of much better things to do with my time.
