Agreed. I am still using my SLVR I got in 2006. I have dropped it 10 times a day, it's gotten wet, it's been stepped on...still works great. It still always has a better signal than anyone's smart phone, no matter which provider.

I have internet at home, at work, and even in my car (thanks to Onstar - YES, you can just call them to ask a question - google!). Don't need a smart phone. Though I admit part of my resistance is that I HATE how it's turned folks into a society of tick-tick-tick constant iphone a-holes who can't even talk to the people around you.

I stream internet radio while I'm driving and that in itself is worth (to me) the $30 a month.

You can always buy a "cool" phone for full price and NOT buy a data plan.

Check on ebay for unlocked 3g iPhones. You can get one for about $100-150 used.

Just sign up for voice and NO texting and you have an iPhone for $50, that can make calls and use WiFi.

On verizon the data plan is required. It will activate by itself when you call in.

It's not T-mobile when you can swap an old sim card from a flip phone and use that on smartphone to avoid ata. Not sure if that's possible on T-mobile anymore but it was before.

EVERY current regular phone has intentionally been made to look lame. They could easily design a non-smartphone with a keyboard like the Samsung Alias, except made to look cool.

I understand I'm in the minority here, but the way I see it, if you pay for a data plan, you are just giving them free money in a down economy. Just what Verizon wants.

30 x 12 = $360

I personally would not give anyone $360 for no reason. I understand for some people it's essential to be able to check email and reply instantly at any given time. Smartphones have intentionally been made to "require" a data plan, when it could have been engineered to NOT require one, and just use wi-fi when it's available, which is basically everywhere given it's 2011, and the US is not sub-saharan Africa.

I think it's sad that a stylish dumbphone can't be found anywhere. Verizon knows it would hurt their profits, lol.
Do you really want a phone for how well it impresses other people? Seriously? Wow. I could not care less. I've had only 3...THREE...different cell phones. Ever. And the current one is almost 4 years old. It works. And that is all I need.
