I thought the "7" was version 7.x of Windows?

Windows 3.1 (first one I used)
Windows 95-ME (version 4.x)
Windows XP (version 5)
Windows Vista (version 6)
Windows 7 (version 7)
Windows 8 (not yet named?)

No, it's Version 6.1 of New Technology.

It went:

Windows New Technology 3.x
Windows New Technology 4.x
Windows 2000 (New Technology 5.0)
Windows XP (New Technology 5.1)
Windows Vista (New Technology 6.0)
Windows 7 (New Technology 6.1)
Windows 8 (Rumored to be New Technology 6.2)

The original Windows Product was Discontinued after 4.x (Windows 95-ME).
