If you're travelling or just want a phone for a short period of time. is it possible to "rent" a phone without exorbitant fees?

You can get a new pay-as-you-go phone for $20 and load it with a $10 card for 50 minutes of air time. How much cheaper than that do you need to go? And how is it that you couldn't figure this out on your own? I mean, they have these things on display by the cash register at convenience stores, drug stores, discount stores. How could you miss them?

I think OP was asking about international travel, since most US handsets include domestic roaming and hence cost the the same whether you use them here or on the other side of the country.

Yes, you can rent handsets overseas. If you plan on using your device, you don't want to use your own SIM internationally, as you'll get socked with roaming charges for voice and data.

I don't really pay attention to all those things when I'm at checkout. I generally don't buy things that I don't need. I know about the cricket phones but I think that those have significant startup charges.
