Well since the "risk" is pretty low, I would say it is.
IF YOU DO IT CORRECTLY it is pretty hard to eff up.
And you can always go back to stock.
I actually have gone back to stock. I tried ROM after ROM after ROM.... there was always something that just didn't work great.
Stock works great on my phone.
I don't miss being rooted.

Rooted and running a custom ROM don't have to be mutual. Some people just root their stock ROM so that they can gain access to disabled features, remove bundled crapware, or install apps that otherwise wouldn't install.
I'm with you though, my stock ROM is pretty great overall, and I don't really feel like I'm missing anything. I'm running CM9 (ICS) on my tablet. I like it a lot, but I don't like it better than the stock Motorola ROM on my phone.

I disliked motoblur, I was happy to see it go when I installed UnNamed on my Atrix.
I'm rocking UnNamed on my SGS2 also. Comparison between my phone and my girlfriend's is night and day speed/efficiency wise.
I do on my tablet. Wouldn't consider myself an expert, but I may be able to answer your question.
Just curious if a CWM backup image is similar to something like a Windows system image, when you restore it is it a complete over write of the system?
I also posted the question on XDA and no one that has responded seems to know, they recommend using a wipe script before restoring a backup, doesn't add much time to the process but I'm wondering if it's necessary.
Rooting is on my to do list, i just haven't got around to it yet.
It's a wonderful thing, allows me to run ICS on an HTC phone that'll never get an official ICS upgrade
