I've had my current Samsung Gravity for at least the last 5 yrs & it's time to upgrade soon!

These days, I don't really talk or text much & I don't access email. It's mainly for emergency/have-it-if-I-need-it purposes. I do want some important safety apps, such as if you're being followed, you can alert the police or at least contact someone quickly.

I pay $38/mo & want to try to stay at that range if I can help it. I wouldn't mind trying an iPhone, but I'm open to other good brands too.

Any suggestions?

If you don't talk, text, or send email, it sounds like you might be okay with just a basic phone. Some of the Windows phones are under $100 without any sort of contract.

Actually, you might be okay with a non-smartphone. The battery will last longer and the phone won't go out of date as quickly. They are usually under $50.

For your use, I would really recommend getting just a talk and text plan. AT&T has an unlimited talk and text plan with no data for $30/month through GoPhone. Other carriers have similar plans.

Thanks...now, I do still want a smartphone. I said I want some apps on there. I don't want a basic phone, but it certainly doesn't need all the whistles & bells. I knew pretty quickly that I probably won't get an iPhone though.

I'd honestly get another Samsung. I like that brand.

Any other suggestions?

Do you have T-Mobile? What plan are you on? Do you include the price of the phone in the $38/month, or do you intend to purchase the phone outright? If so, do you want to spend $50,$100, $150,$200?

Tracfone is a prepaid phone service and has some decent Android phones. It can be as cheap as $20 for 3 months of service.

I've been using Tracfone since 2007 and I have been happy with it.

T-Mobile and AT&T both offer 1000 minutes which are good for one year for $100 plus sales tax, that seems like the best deal and the extra minutes roll over if you renew before they expire.

Yes, T-Mobile. I paid for the phone outright & I get like 300 nights & wknd & unlimited on weekdays of calling & texting. Again, I don't talk or text much. I just like to have it if I need it including those app I mentioned above.

You didn't specify how much data you get for that price, so I will assume 1 GB.
Telcel America a Tracfone subsidiary and is a Tmobile MVNO with a very good plan for $31.50 a month ($35 without auto refill). Although you may not have an immediate need for the international calling, I think it's a good price even if you only make domestic calls. If you find you need to make international calls then it's nice to know they won't cost any extra.

Telcel America Extended Nation Plans
30-Day $31.50 with Auto-Refill
TALK AND TEXT UNLIMITED
1 GB at 4G LTE† then 2G* until 12/31/15
UNLIMITED** Calls to international land lines
UNLIMITED** Calls to mobile numbers in Mexico, Canada, China and India

T-Mobile Compatible SIM Card $6.99
