I was reading the classified section of a newspaper to see what I needed to do to have a yard sale ad listed. The "instructions" say "try not using cell phones." What is that all about? To place an ad, it requires a phone number. So what difference does it make whether I use my cell phone or home landline? Either way is a privacy issue. Is there some other reason not to use/give a cell number in the ad?

No, I don't know why they would say that. Hell, I don't even HAVE a land line.

Although, if you do happen to be worried about people having your #, you could use google voice if you want. It's free. You don't sound like you care much but it's worth mentioning.

It is a legacy note, from years ago, to protect you from excess usage.

Up to a couple of years ago, people might hesitate to call me because they don't want to use my minutes up. "OH, is this your cell phone?"
Now I don't identify my number as cell, home, or office. It is just the number I want people to use.

That is true in the USA. In foreign countries, people who call cell phones are charged (unlike here, cell phones have their own area codes or prefix numbers so you know when you are calling one)
