I was perusing the selection of phones on the AT&T site. I counted 42 models of smart phones and only 11 models of dumb phones.

My guess is that in the next year or two 70%-80% of cell phone users will have a smart phone. I switched to a smartphone two months ago when my flip phone died. The local ATT store had only two texting models (which was what I was looking for), maybe five or six flip/slider models and a whole bunch of smart phone models. I didn't count how many. They even had three models of the iPhone. The 4S, 4 and 3GS. The 3GS is available for 99 cents with contract. I love having a computer in my pocket and it is sure easy to text with my iPhone4.

Seems like a trend is underway.

A trend is under way? It's been underway since mobile phones were a thing.

Just over 50% of mobile phones in service are smartphones now.

There will always be dumb phones because there will always be a market for them. Not everybody wants a smartphone. My 70+ relatives have no interest in smart phones. They just want phones that work and have big easy to see buttons on them.

I agree, but have to wonder if the cellphone market will be strong enough to make it profitable for manufacturers to continue to upgrade and produce regular cellphones.
It will depend on volume and smartphones are grabbing market share very quickly.

Look at monitors. I like my 1920x1200 resolution, but 1080 is becoming the standard height. And it is difficult to find 1200 monitors.

I just hope that folks who don't prefer smartphones aren't one day all cornered into using Jitterbug phone service...

I expect smartphones are going to become so common and cheap that soon enough there will be an app for a large 10 key board. Gramps will just have to fire up the app and see ten big numbers to make his call.

There may be an app for that already, far as I know.

Actually, the 10 key keyboard on the iPhone has rather large squares and numbers as it is. Easier to dial than any phone I've owned.

For those of us who work for a company that does not allow camera or video phones our choices are diminishing by the day. I to was amazed at the percentage of Americans who now have smart phones. I had no idea that it had risen so fast.
