I am going for a summer to Greece and am preparing my cell phone. I received this message from someone in our group,

Also note that if your phone is a "Smart Phone" then you should "Turn Off" its ability to download data through the SIM card.

I have no clue how to do this, can someone advise?

It would help if you told us what brand and model of your phone it is and which carrier you are on.
If you are Verizon or Sprint, your phone wont be able to work there at all unless you have a hybrid device (eg. BlackBerry) which can operate on CDMA and GSM networks.

Regardless, if its an Android OS, do the following:

Go to Settings> Wireless and networks> Mobile Networks

You should then see an option for cellular data or similar. Just make sure its un-ticked.
