A lot of these apps have no legitimate reason to auto start with the system.. i can understand antivirus apps or any widgets. But i'm baffled why a game i downloaded should auto start?

I downloaded this app "startup manager" to my rooted android and removes countless entries from the startup including yelp, pandora, gmail, google maps, and many others.

My android now takes 2min instead of 6min to startup and the respective programs i disallowed from autostarting still work fine when i launch them on demand.

Still dont understand the purpose of autostarting these progs...

Auto starting applications happens on a Windows computer, why would it be any different with a cell phone. I am not surprised that it happens. Clearly, you know how to prevent it from happening. The average user would not know how to disable the auto start, nor would they care.

Gmail SHOULD autostart and should not be set not to. That is how your phone receives email in real time.

Pandora or yelp? Are you using the widgets for those apps? Any widgets autostarts to run the widget.

A game? Was it a FREE game? Some free games autostart so they can pop ads at you every now and again.

So there are reasons...

Not that many Windows apps auto start with the system.. well less than 1/2 of them and they're much easier to disable. I still had to clean some up but it's not been such a pain compared to Android apps auto starting (well over 50%)

I can't imagine the nightmare for an unsophisticated user with a low-end phone (who doesn't know about rooting and has to put up with the unnecessary poor performance.)

Things that intercept links (like if you go to a link that has tapatalk enabled, it will see that and open tapatalk instead if you want it to, or if you click a reddit link and you have reddit is fun installed, it will open in the app instead of the browser) need to open at startup, or else they won't work correctly.

Why does it matter if your phone starts up a few seconds/minutes quicker? If your phone REALLY took 6 minutes to start up, you must be having issues or you have an old phone or something. Mine starts in 31 seconds (according to the app you listed up top) with the following apps coming up at startup: gmail, groupon, k-9 mail, maps, mybackup pro, pandora, reddit is fun, rom manager, screenshot it, startup manager, superuser, tapatalk, the weather channel, youtube, and zedge. This is not including system apps.

Maybe you had tons more than I do but I just don't see how potentially screwing up functionality of the phone is worth a few extra seconds or minutes of your day.

I am going to keep this app installed cause it does have some cool features, so I appreciate you telling us about it.

edit: screenshot for the cool little notification about boot time:

My phone takes awhile to boot. So? I do it maybe once a week. No biggie.

If the phone didn't crash and lock up so often, then never turning it off would be the easy solution.. although after I removed so many start up apps, lock-ups became less frequent. Hmmmm...

Turn-based games auto-start so they can send you notifications of the moves. Most other games do not need to autostart.

Wouldn't all those apps that weren't needed at start-up time also use battery power?
