I have two phones with verizon right now. One is a LG Ally Android and the other is a simple LG 5500 Flip Phone. On the plan I have, if I use the Adroid, it cost me roughly $80 per month and if I use the Flip Phone, I pay about $55. I have the cheapest and most basic plan that you can get with Verizon: 450 minutes per month along with 250 Text Messages.

In my honest opinion, Verizon seems too freakin' expensive. I don't even want to imagine how much my bill would be per month if I were to increase my minutes or Text Messaging limits or switched to the Nationwide plan (which is what I really want). Also, Verizon Charges not only $15 each time you change your number, but the also double your bill for the month that you change it in. They also have several other fees that they like to tack on at any given time.

So, in a nutshell, would switching to T-Mobile be a smart choice if I wanted to save some money on similar phones or would Sprint, Crickett, or some other mobile company out there be cheaper? I have heard both good and bad things about all of those but I would really like to know WHICH one is actually cheaper. Thank you to anyone who can offer up some advice!

It's not that simple. Sprint and T-Mobile tend to be the most affordable of the big 4 (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile). But it really matters on which plan perks are of most benefit to you.

Generally, Sprint tends to be the cheapest for a smartphone plan starting at $59.99 (+$10 if you want a 4G phone) for unlimited data, unlimited texts, 450 minutes, unlimited mobile to mobile (sprint perk feature that no other provider has) and nights and weekends starting at 7pm. Additionally, Sprint gives you discounted phone upgrades yearly rather than every 2 years with any of the smartphone plans.

For the $59.99 plan, you need to sign up through this link: Sprint | Everything Plus(SM) Referral Program and enter Russ.S.McGuire@Sprint.com and 383. This is documented on the Sprint's VP of of Strategy Blog: McGuire’s Law » Russ McGuire and well known (google "sprint eprp").

T-Mobile tends to be the cheapest if you want a dumbphone and need a lot of talking minutes.

I suggest you really look at the pricing and plans to see which is the best value to you.

Very good comments. My suggestion to the OP is do alot of research. If you live in a major market (near a big city) you probably will get good reception with most carriers. T-Mobile is cheaper but Verizon has superior service and reception to all of them. In my opinion Sprint is the best because it combines good reception and pricing. It also has tons of employer discounts which makes it ideal.

T mobile charges a slightly smaller tax rate... which tells me some of those taxes charged may not actually be from the gov.. but that's another thread...

I have an unlimited Verizon plan at about $150/ month. for the Droid. T-Mobile is within a few dollars of the same plane. I didn't think the lesser network was worth it. but my phone is my business

I can understand different fee structures, but how can there be different tax rates?

I have T-Mobile right now, and am well past the 2 year contract ending (doing month to month now). The Sprint plans look enticing, and am looking to upgrade both mine and my wife's phones. I am strongly considering the Samsung Epic 4G with the family plan.

1.) Does the discounted rate you mentioned earlier for the individual plan, can it apply to the family plan as well? If so, what referral would I use?

2.) I know that Sprint charges an additional $10/month for 4G speeds. Is this $10 on top of the family plan price, or would I be paying $20 because of 2 lines?

3.) Can you give me some idea of the overall surcharges/taxes/fees are like? How much does it add to your normal monthly plan price?

Ian

A lot of people, including myself have switched to T-Mobile because they are less expensive. I even terminated the contract I had with Verizon, which was supposed to expire in July of 2012 because I was fed up with their rates and their plans.

I was paying about $90 per month on the average with Verizon, and that's with 900 minutes (never exceeded 450), and 250 text messages, but with T-Mobile's 500-minute plan, plus unlimited text, that will drop to about $70 a month. There were other reasons I dropped Verizon, which I won't mention, but overall, you should expect to pay less with T-Mobile.
