5 years without a land line. I like it only having one number. I like having some control over who has that number.

I got my parents uma. After paying for the device (130) and Number Port (40)
Then you just pay $4/month for taxes.
i think it is a good deal. some old folks like the idea of a phone that everyone in the home can use.

I got rid of the standard phone over ten years ago. I did have a local only line for when a relative would come by and stay the night, since she didn't have a cell, but anything but local local was on her dime.

My 84 year old inlaws are about to get rid of the home phone too. All the relatives, friends, and kids have cells. They have plans with unlimited calls and its redundant. Not that my fil hasn't always been current, but when the grandparents plan to get rid of it, then you can see the writing on the wall.

I've found that I never missed having that 'backup' phone. When I was running some ads I got a second cell and used that number.

Haven't had one since 2004. My old roommate didn't even have one in 1998!

I do have a second line on my cell phone plan though for emergencies.

The only very small regret i have is now that i have a small biz, sometimes when i need to fax something, i would like to not have to leave my house. But that is not very often and it is more cost effective to go to the copy shop when needed.

That's the one thing that motivated me to ask this originally. I still have the land line but would get rid of it I thought those annoying solicitation calls would not start coming to my cell. Do those who have a cell only start getting the survey calls and charity solicitations on your cell? Right now I don't but that is because they all still come to my land line.

A lot of our friends and family have done this, and they are fine with it. I think at some point we will do it to save the money, but for now, I like having the landline and voicemail as my primary phone. I will not be tethered to a cell phone 24/7. I want to be LESS available, not more available. Most of the time, the cell phone is either in my car, or the battery is dead.

Well yes, in a sense, since you would be giving out your cell number every time a phone number is requested. But....just register your cell phone with National Do Not Call https://www.donotcall.gov which should prevent about 95% of the calls. After you've been enrolled for 31 days, you can then report any numbers/names of business which somehow make it through the filter system.

Bottom line: cell phone numbers can now be enrolled in this service. Formerly this was not true.
