thumbs up to you if you can live without internet on your phone.
I can't justify spending the extra $30 or more for a data plan. I currently have a basic flip phone and an iPod Touch for use with WiFi. I'd like to get an iPhone and use it as an iPod Touch, but with the ability to make phone calls.
I'd reconsider this if Verizon ever reduces their 3G/4G rates.
You can use any phone with a sim card on Consumer Cellular - their prices are quite good for both phone and data, and I think they use AT&T network (but don't quote me on that.
Many of them also advertise unlimited 4g, but dump you back to 3g once you reach a certain amount of data each month.
I have a Simple Mobile plan for my tablet and they do drop you down at 5gb. However, I have not yet used more than 1gb in a months time, so I am not concerned about the usage restriction. I cannot, for the life of me imagine what I would have to do to use 5 gb. It would be phenomenal.

Not trying to be combative or anything but my question is: why are some people fine with buying a smartphone without a contract and, in the process, fine with paying nearly (or in some cases more than) $600 (I just don't get it. I'm asking not to be contentious but because I really don't understand their thinking. Are they experts at tinkering with the phone after purchase or something?? thanks
The just announced LG Nexus 4 can be bought unlocked for $299 for an 8 GB model and $349 for a 16 GB model.
