Not sure with the iPhone, but with Android as long as you log back into the same Google account everything will be available. I share the same apps between my tablet and phone by sharing the Google account.

If you replace an iPhone with another iPhone then all that is needed is to use the same iTunes/iCloud account. It also works with sharing apps between iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone.

thanks SW, but surely there has to be something else required-- perhaps an IMEI number or receipt from Google play or.. I don't know. maybe I'm worrying too much

No special requirements. When I upgraded from a Droid X to a Droid Razr, my paid apps transferred but I had to add the "free" apps to my phone. Just needed to login to my Google account on the new phone.

Worrying FAR too much. Every app you have ever downloaded will still be available to you. Login to new phone with SAME Google account, go to PLAY store, select MY APPS and they will all be there for you to install again.

It's the same for the Amazon app store as well if you use it.

I've bought a couple of smartphones off contract. One was $450, my newest one was $550. I bought the first one for my wife when her phone started having issues out of warranty but still in contract, she wanted something better. I bought the new one because I wanted the smaller size with the same screen (RAZR to RAZR M) and better battery life. As long as I'm getting a decent increase in performance or ability, I have no problem with buying a new phone off contract.
