we're travelling in the NW US (WA, OR, ID, MT) and wondered what the best carrier is for a data (we don't talk much, mostly text, email and browsing). Last time I tried roaming thru my Canadian home carrier and paid ridiculous amounts ($50/100MB) for data.

Do you have unlocked phone? Doesnt matter what service you get if the phone is locked to your Canadian carrier (Fido or Rogers?)
I would say AT&T if you are on GSM, but they are all generally the same. I was in Vancouver in January and just got an international data package added for that month. It turned out to be less expensive than getting a pay as you go SIM on Rogers and paying for connection charge/set up and data rates etc.
