Nokia was once number one (or maybe two) in cell phones. Now they are number ten.
I think when the Iphone got to be big, Nokia was slow in making a phone like the Iphone. Blackberry also had this problem. Nokia made a deal with Microsoft to put Windows Phone OS on most Nokia phones. This caused Nokia to slide even more. Maybe Nokia thought people would like Windows Phone OS. Or, was there some reason they couldn't use Android?
Nokia is from Finland and is a great success story for them. Finland also has the best schools in Europe.

The situation isn't exactly great for Android manufacturers besides Samsung. Sure, Nokia could have gone with Android, but it's not obvious that they would've been able to succeed there. Just look at HTC. Despite having probably the best hardware designs out there, they're getting utterly annihilated by Samsung.
The cell market is radically different than it was when Nokia and Motorola were top dogs.
Now, if you look around, its not just cell phone makers anymore, its electronics companies that have a cell phone division.
Its difficult for a stand alone cell phone maker like Nokia to hide their financials or mix results to shareholders when its behind the curtain of a massive multibillion dollar eletronics company. For all we know Samsung could very well be just be breaking even with the SGS4.
The Nokia>MSFT deal hasnt been finalized but the stock holders (including myself) have said yes to the buyout of the phone division. I think this will be a huge win for MSFT and Nokia moving forward.
Nokia, when Android started to rise, almost did nothing and thought it would still rule the world. Well, things didn't go as what they expected. But, I have to admit that Nokia provides great products.
Nokia got complacent, Thouh they did have many innovations.
Apple is exhibiting signs of complacency but once everyone has an iphone or ipad, everyone will want more, as was the case with Nokia.
If Nokia took it upon themselves to make a phone with a glass screen instead of plastic we would be talking about Nokia instead of Apple.
But no matter because Google can't be beat, hate Google all we want but their world domination has been in play since 1990's. Apple can't compete with that.
It’s a risk—but not an unreasonable one. Nokia’s chances of actually making money selling Android phones are pretty slim.
Yup. The idea was to be at least top dog in a new eco-system rather than one where competing for market share amongst hardware companies was almost a guaranteed loser. RIght now they are 80+% market share in one OS that is growing, thanks in part to their portfolio.
So while Android the OS might be ruling the roost, go ask any OEM making Android devices how much they are raking in. Profit margins have been slim since smartphones came out. With the way way things are now I would be surprised to see HTC in the next 5 years, the way they are now. Its not a sustainable business to be in to try and compete with these mega electronics companies that have the capital as well as materials to undercut their competitors with 'not quite' state of the art displays and electronics.
When Moto Mobility was bought by Google, that was a definite sign going Android was a blood bath. NOkia had to do something because Symbian was toast.
Again, the problem is part media hype in that everyone these thinks a failure is everything except a home run. Windows is an excellent OS and a great choice for people that want something other than...
These devices are now commodities. Whereas back in the day it was a paler version of what it is now.
Phone design when screens were smaller was far more en vogue than now for obvious reasons.

I thought Nokia was making a come back focusing on low end phones for emerging markets (africa, etc), is that not the case?
