This may be a dumb question but I don't know the answer...(and could not find an answer online) I'm going to Arizona soon and would have a knowledgeable friend available to go to Best Buy or wherever and shop smartphones and not get bamboozled...if I found a phone I liked and wanted to buy, does it make any sense to get it there? Can I get my local Texas phone exchange? What matters most in terms of follow-up customer service if I did not buy it at home -- the carrier? The store? (e.g. get it at Verizon or AT&T store, or even Costco, then deal with THAT store back at home?)

Thanks!!

There shouldn't be any problem getting your local exchange. If you already have a phone (smart or dumb), then you can also get the number ported to the new phone, even if it's on another carrier.

You shouldn't have any issues with follow up service. If you get it from a national store (Best Buy, Costco, etc) then I'd guess that they'd provide warranty service for the hardware for some amount of time, and some amount of service after the sale, but the carrier should always provide service for carrier related issues.

Yes, you can keep the same phone # and buy the phone in another state. It isn't a port unless you are switching providers. It might be a little more difficult it you try to establish service out of state and want a local phone # from another market.

Yea, my nephew lives in NYC and has been still using his old Columbus phone number for going on 10 years now with different carriers and phones...

Should have also added that we have 5 FL numbers, including one added just a last month, and haven't lived in FL for almost 3 years.

Verizon didn't even question me when I told them I wanted the new number to be in FL, and just asked what town, area code I wanted.

Thanks everyone... I realize based on your replies I left out a major element though -- I NEED a local number, as I lost my very old cellphone (it was not on a "plan") and it still had my NY number. I want to be "local" with the new phone, so I would not just be transferring an EXISTING cell number.
