What you believe of the iPhone and iPhone users is the primary reason why it's so easy for Apple to sell iPhones; you are underestimating both, the company and users. I work at a large university with a huge number of foreign students from Asia and India, and just about every one of them has an iPhone 5s. It's the same in China and a lot of places overseas.
That said, I use a cheap LG regular cell phone (not a smartphone), and have no idea if the iPhone is any better or worst than other smartphones. But one thing is certain: all cellphone makers strive to catch-up and dethrone the iPhone.
