I currently use Selectel with no contract but the reason I'm considering a switch is that I need a new phone and Verizon's individual plan is about the same as Selectel, $55 vs $60 per month.

I must have either of the two carries because I need the service due to a high amount of traveling to rural areas.

Is there any reason why I shouldn't go back to Verizon? Do I get stuck using the same phone that I start the plan with? It's been so long since I've had a contract with them I forgot how the deal works.

Verizon has 2 year contract pricing, you will use this phone for the length of the contract, unless you acquire another phone somehow. Early upgrade used to be 20 months that went away some time back. Then there is the Verizon Edge program where you pay the phone off in monthly installments. I dont know if Edge is available to new subscribers though.

If you or anyone knows how to get a human to speak with you via phone once you have signed the contract, good luck. I have been trying for five days now to simply let them know that my credit card was compromised so a new card number was issued. I can't get into the website because last May someone hijacked my husband's account (evidence suggests it was done by someone in a local Verizon store) so Verizon's fraud contact advised us to put a lock on our account so no one including us can get into it online. Now when I phone, they want my account security code which I do not have--even when I tried the "new account" selection. How on earth do they expect someone to get a new account if they don't ever get to speak to a human being?

We have had crappy service from Verizon from the start, and as soon as my contract expires, I'm going with a different provider. If you want total frustration anytime you are not actually standing in one of their stores with cash in hand, my advice is to go elsewhere.

Or you can just call *611 from your Verizon phone, hit 4 for other options then say "customer service" and get a Verizon rep on the phone inside of 2 minutes like I've done 5 times this month.

Been a Verizon customer since before the Alltel buyout... Candy bar phones of 1998 were the best.
