Business that provided plan is going out of business - the phone is mine - bought and paid for. Phone used very little - data hardly at all. What would be the best economical way to keep the current phone number and start new service as an individual?
Or get a new number if necessary.
Thank you
As long as your number is still active then you can have it ported over to a new company which can take a week to 10 days depending on the company. Whether you can use your phone or not will depend on what service it is now on, if it is a GSM then ask your present company for the unlock code so you can take your phone to one of the other GSM providers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, if your phone is CDMA then ask your provider what network they were using and try to go with them.
If your phone is CDMA - Verizon or Sprint - then take a look at Page Cell. I've been with them for years and have a 250 min/text plan for $12 month, no contract.

The current carrier is Verizon - how will I know if a phone is "CDMA"? What does that mean?
Thank you!

Verizon and Sprint are CDMA cell providers - do NOT have sim cards
ATT and the 'the orange one' are GSM - phones have sim cards
If your phone currently works on Verizon then it 'should' work on Page Cell - a Verizon reseller, includes Vz text. They are very nice to work with. You can do an online 'port' but you'll still wind up talking to them. You can setup a monthly auto-payment so your relationship will be just like with Verizon, only less cumbersome. Accounts are recognized as 'cards'. Each month a new card is generated (auto-pay) and applied to your number. You WILL want to responsibly ensure for yourself that the process takes place. In the two or three years I've been with them there has been only one glitch which may have been my fault.
Tip: I purchased two cards just to ensure that as one is applied, a new one is generated. Just in case I forget to pay attention a backup is in place. You could also just purchase something like a 100 minute card that's good for 120 days, $10.
Larger cards have bigger data limits. The small 'cards' have low data limits. I use wifi so the data is of no concern to me.

All LTE based Verizon phones do have SIM cards.
