Do a master reset first, then make sure they are unlocked and then donate them to a charity such as http://www.philippinebasicneeds.com/ or I bring them to the Philippines and give them directly to poor people who do not have a phone.

If they're not worthless (i.e. an old iPhone) - sell it on Craigslist. The recycling places pay very little and eBay charges outlandish fees.

If they're worthless (i.e. nearly anything that isn't an iPhone) - hammer -> garbage.

I'm willing to put in some effort to recover say 50% of the purchase price. I'm not willing to put in effort for 5-10%.

If a person decides to destroy their phone and put it in the garbage, please think of the environment so take the battery to Homedepot, or another battery disposal place, to put in the bin there instead of tossing it in the garbage.

Simple; just resell or something to squeeze some extra cash out of it

Yesterday I was organizing my bedroom closet and found an old Palm in a box on the shelf. That phone worked great once upon a time. I'm going to recycle it. I'd be lucky to get a penny for it.

I don't really have old phone.

My dad keeps an old one just in case the current one breaks, so he can activate an old one with one call.

I found a phone that I liked and used that model for many years, when it would break I would get that exact model, last time it broke the model was discontinued so I had to get a real smart phone. That model had Email and a key board, something I need and used, but all apps came preloaded you could not download a new app. It had Verizon Navigator app build in and you could activate it for a day for like $1.99.

But yahh, keep an old phone as a spare just in case.
