If the whole area goes out, or if you live in a highrise where comcast equipment is kept downstairs, then yes there is no hope when the power goes out but I have found a UPS stops the phone, modem, router and my computer from going out during the many quick off times where power only stays off for just minutes.

There is no question that having a cellphone is important during times of outages but when the power goes out for hours, unless the cell site you will depend on has a generator backup, it too will go out during complete outages. One time during a hurricane outage in south Florida nothing was working except for my wired phone line, years later the phone company went to fiber optic cable and then during the next hurricane outage that lasted days, even the landline was out too since fiber optic requires power and the battery backup they have on them only lasts so long, so I had to drive a half mile to find a working cell site that was not in the power outage area.

I'm assuming Magic Jack can be used like a plain old Tracfone (which I've been using, but buying minutes is starting to get pricey), as I don't have Internet at home and don't want a "smart" phone. Offering a special start-up price now, so I'm considering it. Any downsides?

The biggest downside for you is that it won't work as you don't have internet, VOIP phones require internet service to work.

I thought so, but had heard that it can also be used as a regular mobile phone? That answers that! Thanks.

It can be used as a mobile phone with the Magic Jack application installed and when on wifi or data but you would need an android or a Iphone to do that, so I guess it will not work for you unless you get one.

If you have a home phone now, then internet at home may cost less than the cost of the home phone, check with the available providers in your area.

Should be listed in the app drawer under H unless you've disabled it.

He's disabled it. Or someone did. It's a known issue that happens when you disable it.
