We have an older Samsung that works ok except where you plug in the charger is getting tired...the new chargers where you rest the phone on it rather than plug in, are those only for the newest phones?

That's only for devices that have wireless charging. Some cases provide wireless charging, but otherwise you will need a phone that supports it.

There are aftermarket accessories that allow wireless charging for select phone models. Which Samsung model are you using ??

I have seen a device sold at my local Sam's Club that is compatible. You have to install a custom battery cover (included in the box) to make it compatible. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are using a cell phone case, the wireless charger might not work. I use a Mophie case/extended battery that makes the wireless charging incompatible with my Galaxy S6 phone.

It's simply an inductive charging standard (QI). It's not product based.

As others have mentioned, you can simply buy a QI battery for older phones.

From a convenience perspective, I think this is one of the best "innovations" recently. It's nice to walk into a coffee shop and be able to charge your phone by just laying it on a certain part of the table.
