Don't hate on the flip phone! I had one in the 1990's and texting was actually easier (T9) then using an iPhone or Android phone today.

Yep! I could text without looking at the phone. Now with the smartphone, I have to look. The big advantage of the smart phone, though, is I can text SO MUCH FASTER (and I can do speak to text, so I can just talk into the phone and have it transfer it to text for me).

I think texting on an old-fashion flip phone means having to push one button 1 to 4 times in order to get to the right letter...kind of cumbersome, I used one flip phone for making calls and using its built-in camera when I don't plan to do any texting. But these days I use only an iPhone. Still I seldom do any texting.

I use a flip phone through Tracfone, $6.25/mo with plenty of minutes included. Tracfone charges 30 seconds for a text. I rarely text, and, yes, it's a pain to text with a flip.

When you send a text, is that counted against your call minutes, or is that called "data" and charged against your data account?
Not a stupid question. Texting with the Short Message System (160 characters) was part of the first digital systems standard, GSM (originally Groupe Spécial Mobile) developed in the early 1980s. Often simply called second generation or PCS (personal communication services ) in the USA.

It was followed shortly with General Packet Radio Service, which permitted data rates of 56 kbit/second, so it was commensurate with telephone modems at the time.

Today nearly all data is transmitted using 3G or 4G technologies at higher speeds. But texting is still transmitted over 2G technologies, and is treated different than data.

That said, there are some services that transmit texts as data. So there is no answer to your question which is 100% all of the time. Normally texting and data are treated separately because of the underlying technology that they use, but you should ask because you can get burned.

Like the movie "In Time" where time is money -- literally -- enabling the wealthy to live forever while the poor have to beg, borrow, and steal enough minutes to make it through another day.
