Really stupid question (sorry, those who are light years ahead of me in phone technology)

When you send a text, is that counted against your call minutes, or is that called "data" and charged against your data account?

I have decided on Consumer Cellular for my first cell phone and did not take a data plan, only call minutes. Depending on the answer to the above question, will that mean I cannot send texts?

It appears that their basic plans do not include text at all, my guess is that the text will cost you minutes if allowed at all but how much it would cost you would have to ask them. They have a text and data plan but I do not see a call and text plan, possibly you went with the wrong company.
https://www.consumercellular.com/Info/Services
Tmobile or AT&T offers 1000 minutes for $100 plus sales tax, good for one year, and unused minutes carry over to the next year as long as you renew on time, with Tmobile it is text or calls, with AT&T texts cost double what calls cost per minute for text, so text is 20 cents. People should buy phones and plans based on their desired use and coverage area where they live, work and travel, why text when you can make a one minute phone call for the same amount of less.

Ah, I see. When I ordered my plan the person told me I could add it to the minutes I ordered, but I didn't know what that was (should have seen when it said "text," DUH) so I didn't add that. However, I can always add it to the plan. Pretty cheap at $2.50 a month which, since I've never texted anyone before, should allow plenty of texts for what I might need, which is probably in the range of almost one.

Thanks for your reply.

Also remember if you send or receive pictures & videos it will be data on most plans.

I have a flip phone and use it for calls when out and mostly texting. Dont use the internet but do take pics and store them. With a flip phone you cant butt dial anyone so will stick with it. I have received many calls from my kids and heard them singing, shopping and driving around and all the yelling I did didnt get their attention. Also kept my landline in the event of a power outage. Have to admit I hate texting but verbal communication is now obsolete.

At work, my boss and coworkers prefer to communicate via texting. It was torture on my flip phone. Then I got an iPhone and all was well.

If you must text (and don't want to get a smartphone) dump the flip phone and get a feature (dumb) phone with a full keyboard.

Flip phones are only good for one thing; placing and receiving telephone calls.
